Folks, it has arrived! You'll soon be able to pick up your own copy of the SA Jazz Songbook CD/DVD set from your nearest music store.
The YouTube promo is live and you can watch a few of the tracks we produced over the next few days if you subscribe to Karendra's YouTube channel. I'm thrilled of course because this is the first project I worked on for national distribution. I also didn't know this at the time, but it took these guys ten years to make this performance happen! That is reason e...

We were back filming in the townships recently for an Optentia project on unemployment.
This project saw the NEX-FS100 come out of retirement as I wanted to travel light and also out of security concerns. It is still a good camera, even if it is now showing its age in the compact age of 4K clarity. With Rokinon glass on the front I find I can still get matched footage in an HD project.
Ferdi and I have filmed in a number of South African townships over the past few years and I'm struck by t...

I thoroughly enjoyed working on this project! When Prof Karendra Devroop from Unisa Music Foundation phoned me earlier this year to hear if I'd be interested in editing and mastering this project to DVD for him, it took me about half a second to say yes! I had worked with Karendra before and I was thrilled to have another opportunity to do so again.
Honestly working on this was a breeze. Kudos to Unisa for giving me full access to the raw footage, all the branding artwork I could ask for and j...

I have a friend who works in the film industry. I’ve always envied him because he is an incredibly talented
cameraman who has worked on several high-end television and movie productions. I once asked him about the glamorous entertainment industry he worked in; about
all the expensive toys and the famous people that surrounded him on a daily
basis. He then knocked my feet out from under me when he paused briefly and
remarked with a tired expression on his face: “You know the bigger the pro...

4K, or UHD is all the rage right now. So what is all the fuss about? Well, the resolution of UHD images is absolutely gorgeous! If you need convincing just walk into any electronics store and take a good look at the 4K ready monitors and the demo material Sony, Panasonic and many others are peddling now.
But other than beautifully crisp images there's a very good reason to start upgrading at least one or two of your HD cameras to UHD soon. Most of us edit 1080p HD projects and output that as w...

One of the highlights from Insane September was to film an interview with eNuus journalist and NWU Alumni Award recipient Daniëlla van Heerden.
We really enjoyed meeting Daniëlla and she was kind enough to arrange her interview to be filmed in the same eNuus studio where she reads the Afrikaans news every night. Daniëlla is a master of her craft and a super nice person on top of that, and it was a real privilege to have filmed her.

There's been plenty of new things happening at Optentia Research Focus Area recently. New on their YouTube channel is a three part mini-series for the NWU's We-DELIVER project. This series took us all the way from Vanderbijlpark to Mahikeng and the Lokaleng Community on its outskirts to film footage.
This was my first shoot with a new shoulder rig and a new set of Rokinon cinema lenses and I'm really thrilled with quality of the footage we shot. Part of the fun of this job is seeing new place... Continue reading ...

Part 1 of the new Optentia video series is live on NWUtv, and I'm just thrilled with how it turned out. Prof Ian Rothmann and his team is going from strength to strength and I just love being part of this! I tried to follow a different approach with this video - more footage, less graphics. And having now built up a library of footage covering most of Optentia's activities, editing this turned into an absolute joy. It's a great place to be with a client when you have an abundance of material ...

South Africa has some pretty extreme legislation regarding the use of drones, resulting in a large amount of illegally filmed stuff being out there. So when I was asked to source a commercially licenced supplier for a big corporate video project recently it took some research before I managed to find my drone guys. Currently only eleven companies are commercially licenced in South Africa, and of those only a handful focus on filming for the television and film market. It has become a very spe...

After a very lazy December holiday season, 2017 has suddenly started off with a bang. Even though I've been doing this for a few years now, every single shoot is new and unique and every single year is different in terms of the types of projects I get to do. I try to do one big project a year, usually a documentary, and this one for 2016 happened quickly and very unexpectedly when Conroy Cupido phoned me while I was on another shoot. I was also tempted to blog this story earlier in the week, but I decided to wait a few days. Make no mistake I really enjoy blogging; I find the production process and tools I use absolutely fascinating and I love writing about things I have a passion for. But something about this project just wanted me to wait un...

The MCD Training Centre display at the 2016 Sasol TechnoX show in August proved to be a real crowd-puller and according to MD Dan Sothoane the kids flocked straight to the Blu-ray video displays. The annual end-of-the-year rush usually starts around middle August and this year is no different. Plenty of run-and-gun work here (and a bit of a struggle to get shy people to stand still and speak to you) but I'm happy with the results.

With no less than four multicam projects, October definitely qualifies for the title "multicam month". The ability to sync up three or four camera feeds and assemble a basic cut in a live switching-type fashion has always been one of my favourite features in Media Composer. It is also a MASSIVE timesaver, allowing me to do in realtime what would have taken hours to do manually. In 8.4 multicam is still going strong, even on my rapidly aging HP Elitebook.

If you make a living from professional video a good quality video camera and tripod will be some of your biggest capital investments. And if either one of two is rubbish, the resulting footage will probably be of the same quality. In the modern digital age HD has become the defacto standard, with DV tape now basically relegated to little Suzy’s birthday party and maybe her wedding a few years later on if her parents decide to trim the big day’s budget.
