Optentia Research Programme

July 14, 2012

I pride myself in being flexible and efficient, but this project really broke all records. One interactive project and one video with all the trimmings completed in one week flat (Note - please don't ask me to do this every time, this was an emergency OK:)

Above: The main menu. The interactive project shares a lot of the video's visual elements

Optentia Research Programme is a research department at the NWU's Vaal Triangle Campus. They required material for a major psychology conference held end-July in South Africa and asked me to come up with something unique. Even though we were pressed for time I really enjoyed working with Prof Ian Rothmann and his team.

Wrap up your tablet

July 13, 2012

My editing and camera gear travels a lot so I'm always on the lookout for protective gear. If you're like me and you own and love your Wacom graphics tablet, you'll also know that they tend to live very hard lives inside laptop bags when you're on the move. This pouch offers a protective inner lining, two internal pockets for cables and accessories and an elastic pen loop.

It fits the Intuos 4 and 5 tablets but should be perfect for any of Wacom's similarly-sized Bamboo tablets. Order on...

Give your footage the Instagram look

July 6, 2012

Above: Background elements in this clip were given the DFT Film Stocks treatment to meet the latest NWU visual language requirements. View the full clip on YouTube

The NWU is one of my major clients and they recently changed their visual communication style to a modern contemporary "light and airy" look. Achieving what is basically a stylized "Instagram" look in future video projects through ordinary colour correction tools would take hours so it made sense to look at a serious colour grading...

Creating Iron Man's HUD in After Effects (provideocoalition.com)

June 16, 2012

I've always been a big fan of Adobe After Effects. The first version I ever used was 6.0 and AE has been a part of just about every video and multimedia production I've completed since then. I also happen to be a big fan of all things comic book and superhero related (c'mon, who wouldn't be?). After Effects was used extensively in the new Avengers movie to create Iron Man's high tech HUD. Check it out

You're invited

June 11, 2012

I thought I'd screencap this one before taking it down tomorrow.

The NWU's Faculty of Engineering recently needed an online invitation for the official opening of their new Faculty complex. Fast. And because the guests included VIPs from government, university and industry sectors it needed to shine.

The site itself included RSVP forms and directions to the venue. I don't usually do websites but this one turned out pretty good and did it's job very well. Sorry I can't show it to you...not eve...

And in today's episode...

May 20, 2012

Above: Podcasts. Webisodes. Whatever you want call them, they're fun, they're popular and they're spreading through social media like wildfire. Who cares about broadcast television when you have the internet...

The NWU's Centre for BMI came first with BMI | TV. Then came the NWU Faculty of Engineering with e-Info. And now there's Take Note by the NWU's School of Music. All three projects aim to inform and entertain with regular internet-based video news programmes. Although each series is uniq...

Keep a lid on it. A really tough, waterproof one

May 6, 2012

Above: My editing laptop now lives in a Pelican 1090 Hardback case when it’s not at home on the desk. The Avid sticker is optional and does not come with the case...

Editing on a laptop opens up a world of mobility to any video editor. Owning an Avid workstation that fits inside a backpack and operates on battery power has enabled me to work on projects everywhere from offices, conference rooms and even the back of a Land Rover in the middle of the Northern Limpopo bush.

But mobility com...

Around the world...before the Open Day!

April 24, 2012

Above: The completed interactive UI featuring a 3D rotating globe that takes the user on a trip around the world.

When you get us to do a project, you’re guaranteed of two things - the final product will be handmade from the ground up and absolutely unique.

This is especially true for an interactive project just completed for the International Office of NWU’s Vaal Triangle Campus. Every year NWU Vaal receives a large number of students from all across the world. A need developed...

Be the master of your own destiny (warning: opinion piece to follow)

April 23, 2012

This week two years ago I walked into my boss’s office, dropped my resignation on her desk and in doing so set in motion a series of life-changing events. Apparently I was later accused of having thrown down said resignation on said desk. In hindsight I should perhaps have done that because then the first part of this story would have made for much more dramatic reading.

Anyhow, two years later I am, fortunately or unfortunately, depending on whether you love me or hate me, still around doin...

In production

April 14, 2012

Above: The project's prototype interactive UI. Users will be able to choose between Afrikaans, English and Setswana with ample provision for hard of hearing and deaf users in the form of Sign Language interpreting and subtitling of all video content. Shown here is Language Directorate director Prof Marlene Verhoef giving the interactive presentation's introduction.

Every now and then I'm lucky enough to receive a project on my desk that really allows me to push the technical envelope a little....
