Get a handle on it (a cheese handle)

August 6, 2014

My camera upgrade project is finally complete. The last phase was to replace the stock handle/mic holder on my FS100 with something much better and more sturdy. The handle that comes with the NEX-FS100 is probably the worst and most poorly designed component of the whole camera system, and really a piece of string tied to the lens would be an upgrade. Instead I went for Wooden Camera's 70mm NATO Cheese Handle kit.

It is beautifully machined from solid aluminium and features a quick-release/adjustable position base that screws into a cheese plate with two Allen screws. The handle fits perfectly on my Genustech top cheese plate and also allows the camera's foldout viewfinder much more space to move than my previous handle setup.  To replace the Sony mic holder that was integrated into their horrible handle, I now use a separate Rycote Lyre Shock Mount that screws into the right side of the top cheese plate.

Unfortunately there are no local suppliers for Wooden Camera, so I ordered mine from B&H.

2.7K GoPro test

July 21, 2014

When GoPro launched the Hero 3 there was a lot of hype around its ability to shoot 2K and 4K resolutions, most probably the next big thing in video since HD. However I used mine exclusively for HD work so I really didn't pay too much attention to the 4K en 2.7K settings in the menu. I actually remember thinking "What do they expect us to do with this crap?!" when I noticed that 4K was only offered at 15fps.

Then last week Philip Bloom exploded the interweb with a 2.7K masterpiece and I simply ...

Put it all in a box

July 21, 2014

The world's most popular action camera has become a very important part of my production setup. Along with two GoPro cameras I've now accumulated an unavoidably large number of accessories. And when you show up for a shoot and discover that you've left essential bits of kit behind at home, like a Hero 3 frame case, it's a good indication that you need to start getting everything together in one large box.

With the upcoming Solar Challenge and the amount of GoPro work we'll be doing I've decide...

Awesome drone film by Philip Bloom

July 21, 2014

Philip Bloom clearly stood at the very front of the queue the day cinematography talents were handed out. He shot this film while on holiday in Thailand and used a Phantom drone and GoPro Hero 3+. The results are astonishing and most probably the best GoPro drone movie of the year. Respect, sir, you are an artist.

Camera drones ("drone" meaning Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, or UAV) have very much revolutionised the way video and pictures are recorded to the same extent that action cameras like GoPro and other brands have made the filming of act...

Camera upgrade

June 29, 2014

Above: 7-inch SWIT monitor put to use on a shoot in Sandton in May.

I recently took delivery of a couple of upgrade items for my Sony FS100 camera and thanks to a hectic June I had plenty of opportunity to put the new gear to the test. The NEX-FS100 is an awesome camera and I love mine, but like most things that come straight from factory assembly lines it can do with a few good aftermarket parts in a couple of key areas.

Most users will complain about its very plasticy build quality and ...

More GoPro fast jet awesomeness

F16gopropic

Dutch Air Force pilots certainly love their GoPros. The image above was taken by Dutch F-16 and Apache demonstration crews during recent airshow practice sessions in the Netherlands.

Above: A Dutch F-16 pilot's selfie with a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Above: Another Dutch F-16 driver made himself the envy of fighter jocks everywhere a while ago by snapping a selfie just as he launched a Sidewinder missle from his wing.

Dank je, boys! Keep em' coming.

First look - Media Composer 8.0

June 16, 2014

I've been using Avid software for what must be more than ten years now and honestly, I can't imagine editing with anything else. I even named my company Match Frame Media after a timeline function that I use a lot! I've been hanging onto my version 6.0 licence for a while now and a heap of cool new features in Media Composer 7.0/8.0 finally made me hand over the cash for an upgrade.

First things first - version 8.0 is basically version 7.0 with a few minor tweaks and of course renumbered for ...

Promos, GoPros and flying machines - creating the School of Music's interactive media

May 10, 2014

April 2014 has come and gone and with it no less than 12 promo projects in a little over 4 weeks. Insane! The upside of course is that with this much content to produce you’re presented with an opportunity to really think outside the box to keep things innovative and unique. One of my biggest projects for April was a combined video/interactive project on DVD for the NWU’s School of Music and Conservatory.

Camera upgrade: Phase 1A - Filters

May 8, 2014

Above: Lee 100mm ND9 filter fits my Genus matte box perfectly. Pictured here sans the 67mm adapter lens ring still on order.

I'm busy with a sizable upgrade on my NEX-FS100 camera as well as my post-production software. Sadly it is taking frustratingly long to get all the stuff I ordered. I don't know...maybe it's because I live where I live, or maybe it's because I live in a country that has most its public holidays in April. Or maybe I'm just getting old and impatient.

Anyhow, because th...

The collection grows again... more GoPro jets

May 5, 2014

My collection grows yet again. I picked up this link while waiting for a render. Because that's what post-production people do between renders: burn some internet. Or go outside to smoke. Or eat and make phone calls.

I love GoPro cockpit footage. Consume and enjoy as always: mute the shitty music, ignore the cheesy titles and enjoy visuals that most people outside the military will never see. This one features F-15 jets from the USAF's 67th Fighter Squadron.
